Well, today is the day that a man paid me $1200 for my Audi, then drove out of my drive way and down my road heading toward the highway…. I will probably never see that car again. My Audi! My dream car. The car I never thought I would own but did.
The Audi A-6 Wagon, All Wheel Drive. I remember when they first came out and I started to see them on the road. They seemed untouchable to me. I never thought I would afford one, but if I did it would definitely be that awesome Pearl White color. I would want all the extra's- fully loaded, leather interior, sun roof, sport rack for the kayak I didn't yet own either. I would take my Audi skiing and fishing and camping and driving! Driving on long trips, to fun places, traveling with cool people who know how to enjoy the wide open road….
Bump, as I was shaken out of my day dream while driving home from work in my 1985 Toyota Corolla 4 door sedan that just hit a pothole. I was grateful to have my little stick shift, reliable sewing machine on wheels. But Oh no there's another one of those Audi's up ahead, man they're cool looking. That one's dark green, a nice color too but if I could ever have one I think I would want the pearl white color.

Fast forward to 2007, many cars after that little Corolla sedan. Since then I have owned a Saab, 2 Corolla Station Wagons, a Toyota Pickup, a Buick, a Lexus and a GMC truck and others I may have forgotten. One day in 2007 I decided it was time to give my Toyota Station Wagon to a niece who needed solid transportation as she cruised on into her college years. So that left me driving a 2 wheel drive, red Toyota truck that had almost 300,000 miles on it. It was alright to get me around town and a great one for cruising around the farm hauling hay or firewood or dogs. But it was time for me to look for a "new" car. I knew I wanted something that could haul kayaks, skis and bikes and that I wanted it to be 4 wheel drive so I could take it on the two track roads through the woods up north. Knowing that Toyota no longer sold 4 wheel drive cars in the United States, I sadly conferred to looking for a Subaru or Volvo. The search was on…and that search is another wonderful story in and of itself.

After 3 days of intense internet research and shopping, I saw it. There it was on E-bay, a Pearl White Audi A-6 all wheel drive wagon. Immediately I relived those days being amazed at those new audi's while driving my Corolla Sedan along 696. I had forgotten how nice they were and now there it was on E-bay at a price I could afford. I searched some more to get an idea of what the market was for these vehicles and looked at performance ratings. I discovered that they are known for their excellence and there were only two Pearl White Audi A-6 wagons for sale. One in Pennsylvania and one in Denver. The bidding started….. after a day and a half of negotiating, the Audi was mine!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it! I paid $4500.00 for my Audi; bought from a used car lot in Pennsylvania; paid the extra $265.00 to have it delivered and 3 days later a car carrier semi truck was in front of my house unloading MY Pearl White Audi A-6 wagon, all wheel drive, beautiful car. It was awesome! The next day I dropped the car off at my mechanics shop and told him to keep it for a week and fine tune it in every way. This took another $1000.00 and when he was done, I had myself a tip-top, jewel of a ride. I then place my Yakima Sport rack on the car and it has been the most fun and high performing vehicle, I have ever had. I have truly had a love affair with this car. Kayak, bikes, skis, camping gear, road gear, dogs, husband, x-husband, girl friends; up north, down south, and back and forth to work each day. Snow, Ice, Sunshine any kind of weather, it was my Audi and I have loved it.
Well, in December when we had our first snowstorm of the season, it happened. Black Ice on Miller Road and as I was innocently driving home from having dinner with a friend at Olive Garden, I saw it coming, no one had control of their vehicles, I had spun out and I could see the oncoming traffic. I took my seat belt off, everything went into slow motion as I moved over toward the passenger side of the car and WHACK! Leftover seafood alfredo flew all over the place; I was whipped around like a rag doll, but very happy that I got out of the drivers seat before the door was smashed into where my legs were just a few seconds earlier, then it was over. With traffic still oncoming, I put it in reverse and backed up over the curb and onto the side walk just in time to avoid another slam from oncoming traffic. The rest is just details- tow truck, cop, ticket, body shop, insurance, court, that cop again; in the end the insurance didn't want to pay to restore the car because it was cheaper to pay me the book value. The cop said I didn't have control of my car- $135 to the court; I told them no one had their car under control. The state should have closed the roads, but instead they see it as a revenue generator by pimping cops like you to do the dirty work. No, I didn't say that, I just thought it as I wrote my check and said 'thank you officer'. Insurance paid me $3800 for the damage and I had the car towed back to my house where it sat all winter. This morning I finally advertised the wrecked audi on craigslist and my phone rang all day. I couldn't believe the response. People out there know how awesome these cars are and they want them, even wrecked.
The man paid me $1200 for my car today. So I guess I got my money back out of the car. Tomorrow I'll drive my trusty, rusty Toyota Previa to work and praise God all the way that I have a reliable car to get to work in, then I will begin my search again for the next wagon. Maybe it will be Pearl White; maybe it will be an Audi. But regardless I know I will Enjoy The Ride!!!
