My International Scout has to be the coolest vehicle I have ever owned. So extremely multi-functional as it drove like my dad's Pontiac around town, but it would climb over and around the mountains of Colorado like nothing else could. To this day, they are highly sought after as competition and recreational off road vehicles. In the west there are still many on the road as they have been better preserved because salt is not used in the winter to melt the ice and snow off the roads. The Scout was excellent as a touring vehicle on the highway also, making it one of the most versatile vehicles I have ever encountered. Mine was a golden color with a white top. I bought it from the estate of a gentleman who had retired from the post office in Glenwood Springs, Colorado where I was living at the time.
My scout had a luggage rack that would carry any sort of gear that was needed for the weekend. From bikes to luggage to camping gear and more, it could all go on the rack and allow for six people and two dogs to travel comfortably. I had a bicycle rack on the front of the Scout and a ski rack on the side that was made from PVC pipe mounted in a steel rack that was welded just behind the rear wheel well on the driver's side. This is a great design used in many of the ski resort communities still today.
My most exciting adventure in the Scout was a five-day trip that my sister and I took from Glenwood Springs, Colorado to the four corners area of the west. We saw some amazing country and scenic roads including Bear Pass in Ouray, Colorado; Ship Rock, New Mexico, and Lukachakai Pass Yavapai County, Arizona. We also spent a few days at the Mesa Verde National Park where one can view the cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years, from A.D. 600 to A.D. 1300. The Scout was a perfect ride for this countryside as it could handle any road terrain that we encountered. It served very well as a camping vehicle and it made it one of the most memorable trips I have ever taken.
