I remember my moms and dad's station wagon. It was a Pontiac! My dad loved his Pontiacs because they stood up so well on the farm. He and mom owned and operated a 300-acre fruit farm and pickup trucks were too tall to drive thru the orchards without damaging the fruit on the trees, so he drove Pontiacs because they could take the rough terrain of the orchard lanes and cruise along under the height of the branches preventing damage to his precious crop. The station wagon I remember was a cream color and it had a luggage rack on top. It must have been a 1959 vintage and we always had it loaded full of kids. At that time, I was number eight of 9 children and approaching 4 years old. Our nearest neighbors lived one mile down the road and they had 10 children all about the same ages as us. So there were always lots of kids. In fact when we went to church on Sundays mom and dad each drove a car. One with 5 people and the other with six. Then the neighbors would show up doing the same. The church almost needed a designated parking lot just for the Foley Road gang. The neighbors drove Oldsmobiles and Fords. Dad never felt they could compete with his Pontiacs. Maybe they were good cruisers, but they never would hold up off road in the orchards. He particularly liked the Pontiacs that had a 'Posi-Traction' transmission in them. They really got around well. Of course there were time's when a car would get stuck on the farm, but it wasn't too big of a deal because Dad had quite a few tractors as well. Oh and his trucks, wow! He had big stake trucks that he would use to haul fruit to the market in Detroit. They were 2 ton flat bed trucks, usually GMC. Never Ford- he definitely wasn't a Ford guy. And His tractors were of course John Deere's. Sometimes a McCormick, but never a Ford. It's interesting how people get into a groove about what make of vehicle they prefer. For me it's Toyota. I've had lots of others but I know the reliability and longevity of my Toyotas and they have a great track record.

Anyway, the station wagon… I think it may be the first car I remember liking. We had other Pontiacs, but the station wagon was just so cool. Maybe I liked that I could be in the very back seat in my own little world far away from all the conversation in the front. Or maybe it fascinated me when mom would load all our camping gear on top of that station wagon and head north to a camp ground for a week of living in the woods. It was great fun! That station wagon took us on adventures and I think that's why it was my favorite. In fact, I molded my expectations of what to expect from a car and just like mom's station wagon, my cars have taken me on great adventures too!
